Texas Real Estate License Renewal Requirements

The Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) requires licensed real estate sales agents and brokers to renew their license every two years.

If you are renewing your sales agent license for the first time, TREC requires you to complete 90 hours of Sales Agent Apprentice Education (SAE) courses, 4 hours of Legal Update I and 4 hours of Legal Update II. You are on the right page! Enroll in one of our Sales Agent Apprentice Education (SAE) course packages to fulfill the TREC education requirement for your first license renewal. Please note that a sales agent who has been made a supervisor by their broker prior to their first renewal also needs to take the 6-hour Broker Responsibility Course.

If you have already renewed your license once and this is your subsequent renewal or if you are a broker, TREC requires you to complete 18 hours of Continuing Education (CE) courses. CE courses are different than Sales Agent Apprentice Education (SAE) courses and you can enroll in them by navigating to our Texas CE Packages.

Course Details

Course Format: Our courses are completely online and self-paced. Our courses are a combination of text and interactive elements which consist of true/false matching, vocabulary matching, scenario-based learning and more. This format makes our courses both interesting and engaging.

Course Completions: Students must participate in each course for the specified number of credit hours. Students may not spend more than 12 hours per day on the course and a 30-hour qualifying course may not be started and completed in less than 3 days. Completing more than one qualifying course within the same 3 days is not permitted. Our online course delivery system manages these requirements for you.

Reporting: We report course completions to TREC automatically on your behalf, typically within 1-2 business days.

Course Expiration: Expiration dates vary based on each course but are generally one year after your order date.

Final Exams: TREC requires license holders to pass the SAE course final exams with a minimum score of 70%. The exam consists of 60 multiple choice questions and the student has 180 minutes to finish. If a student fails, they are allowed one more attempt within 90 days. If a student fails a second time, they must restart the course prior to being eligible to take the exam again.

Proctoring: TREC requires third party proctoring of SAE course final exams. Our SAE packages and individual courses include 100% online TREC approved proctoring at no additional cost. This allows you to take your final exams at your own convenience right from your computer, as long as you have an internet connection, webcam and microphone. Upon passing the exam, you will be asked to sign an affidavit verifying your identity.

Certificates: You will receive an electronic certificate of course completion upon successful course completion and submission of the signed affidavit.

Repeat Courses: TREC does not allow license holders to repeat the same course within the two year period preceding their license renewal date.
