If you’re a real estate professional in Virginia, keeping your license active is essential to continue practicing and staying in compliance. The Virginia Real Estate Board requires all salespersons and brokers to renew their licenses every two years. Missing the renewal deadline can lead to penalties or even license inactivation. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth renewal process.

#1: Complete the Education Requirements

In Virginia, newly licensed real estate salespersons must complete 30 hours of Post-License education within one year of initial licensure to maintain active status. The post-license course also counts toward the agents first renewal Continuing Education (CE).

After the first renewal, agents are required to complete 16 hours of CE every two years, which must include mandatory topics such as Ethics, Fair Housing, Agency, Contracts, and Legal Updates. Licensed brokers must complete 24 hours of CE every two years. This includes required courses in Broker Management (6 hours), Broker Supervision (2 hours), and other mandated topics. For brokers whose licenses expire on or after June 30, 2026, updated topic hour requirements will apply.

We put together a summary of the renewal requirements below for your reference.
