How to get your real estate license in Alabama

First, you’ll need to meet certain eligibility requirements as well as the Alabama Real Estate Commission’s (AREC) standards for honesty, trustworthiness, and truthfulness. Let’s look at the eligibility criteria before exploring how to get your real estate license in Alabama.

Alabama real estate salesperson license eligibility requirements

1. Complete a Pre-Licensing Course

AREC requires all aspiring agents to complete a 60-hour real estate course from an accredited education provider. You’ll learn about the basic principles of real estate and be properly prepared for the licensing exam and a successful career in real estate. Complete your course from the comfort of your own home with License Classroom’s AREC-approved 60-hour pre-licensing package, including a license exam prep program at no additional charge. We partnered with PSI to offer you the mandatory proctored course exams at a low cost of $25 per attempt. Pre-register with AREC before taking the proctored final course exam, requiring a minimum score of 70% to pass.

2. Pass the Alabama Real Estate Salesperson Exam

Register for the Alabama Real Estate Salesperson Exam with Pearson Vue within 6 months of passing the pre-licensing course final. The final licensing exam has 140 questions, divided into 100 for the national section and 40 for the state section. Pass with a score of 70% or higher, receiving your results immediately after you finish. You’ll also receive an application for a temporary license, which we’ll explain later. 3. Pass a Fingerprint-Based Background Check

You’ll need to get your fingerprints taken through Fieldprint as part of the required background check. AREC will only have access to your background check results for 30 days, so it’s best to time it appropriately with your application submission. AREC encourages you to apply the same day you go for your fingerprinting appointment. If you’re concerned about passing, you may fill out a Determination of Eligibility form to confirm your eligibility before starting the process

4. Find a Sponsoring Broker

AREC will not approve your application unless you have a sponsoring broker. Your sponsor plays a crucial role in guiding you through the industry and fostering the growth of your real estate business. Alabama brokerages are notified when you register with AREC, and you may receive a lot of emails and calls asking for coffee meetups. Brokerages often compete for new agents, so this is your moment to shine! Ask lots of questions and get to know your options to find the best fit for you.

5. Apply with AREC

Mail your application (received after the exam) with supporting documents and a $210 fee to AREC within 90 days of passing the Alabama Real Estate Exam. Once approved, you’ll receive a temporary license, valid for 12 months, marking the beginning of your journey as a real estate professional in Alabama.
